If you are a veteran of one of the branches of the U.S. Armed Forces, on active military duty, or a dependent of a veteran, you may be eligible for financial aid in addition to educational benefits earned through your service.

Veterans and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

There are two questions on the FAFSA that determine if you are considered a veteran. If you meet any of the definitions below, you do not need to provide parental information when completing the FAFSA, and will be considered independent for financial aid purposes.

Question: "Are you currently serving on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces for purposes other than training?" (#49 on 19-20 FAFSA)

Question: "Are you a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces?" (#50 on 19-20 FAFSA)

You are considered a veteran for financial aid purposes if you:

  • Are currently serving in one of the branches of the U.S. Armed Forces (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, or Coast Guard),

  • Are a National Guard or reserves enlistee was was called to federal active duty for other than state or training purposes,

  • Were a cadet in one of the federal service academies,

  • Were released from service under a condition other than dishonorable,

Butte College Can Help

The college provides a Veterans Services Office dedicated to serving student veterans and veterans' dependents.  Veterans Services provides help with accessing available benefits and offers veterans the support and assistance they need to transition into the civilian world and to pursue a higher education. Veterans face a unique set of challenges as students, and the Veterans Services staff helps cut through red tape so veterans can overcome those challenges. 

Services Offered

  1. Assists students with applying for the GI Bill and dependent educational benefits

  2. Serves as liaison between Butte College and Veterans Affairs on educational benefits

  3. Offers one-on-one personalized assistance

  4. Processes Cal-Vet Fee Waivers

  5. Provides information on financial aid and assistance in submitting the FAFSA
